Satan’s Battle Over Your Mind

Hello, Emily Allison coming at you from my blog, Good Stewards a community of people dedicated to being good stewards of their health, life, and world. I think we can all say that 2020 has been quite a year- and I’m curious, how many of you, or maybe better yet, how many times have you stopped and asked yourself, “What the heck is going on?!”. Well I’ve certainly asked myself that question many times, and in this podcast, I’m going to answer it.

You see, when we’re walking with the Lord, we really shouldn’t be blindsided by the fact that Satan is always working, and we can see the results of his work in the sinful and fallen world around us. I’ve known the answer to the hatred, deception, violence, etc.  that we’ve seen this past year (or past several years) in our country and across and the world is a result of sin and ultimately the answer is Jesus, but recently I was reading a passage from 1 Peter that really clarified to me exactly what is going on and how we as Christians can protect ourselves from it, and not only that, but fight against the devil and his wicked schemes.

1 Peter 5: 6-9 says “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”

Alright, look we as Christians have a lot going on in our culture that requires us to exercise discernment in how to live out our faith in a culture that is very anti-biblical. From the immoral content of just about every movie and tv show there is, to the one sided political agenda in the media, to the laws of the land like abortion and homosexuality that are completely opposite of what the Bible says is good and right in God’s sight, down to the events of recent months of Black Lives Matter, covid, and the most hateful, divided political culture probably that many of us have ever experienced.

What is this verse telling Christians about the world around us? First, In this verse, Peter tells us how to choose what God says over what our culture says. He tells us how to resist the pressure to bow to culture over kingdom, even when we are under persecution to do so. In verse 6 he gives us the answer: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s Mighty Hand, that He may lift you up in due time.” What is humility when you’re a christian? Humility is obedience. We see this in Philippians 2:8, talking about Jesus: “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Jesus humbled himself to the point of leaving his place in paradise to become one of us and live with us, and eventually, die a horrible death in obedience to the father’s will. If Jesus can do that, we must be very careful to humble ourselves enough to obey God’s word and God’s way over culture pressure. Practical ways to do this is to ask ourselves: What is true? What does God command me to do according to His word? Are we willing to look unpopular, outdated, and foolish by the world? Are we willing to be persecuted and scorned and scoffed at for standing with what is right instead of what is accepted? Are we willing to trade in faithful service to God, which is of eternal value, in exchange for the pride and feel good acceptance that comes with jumping on the ever changing cultural bandwagon?

This is a hard thing to do, which is why he tells us to “Cast all your anxiety on Him, for He cares for you.” God is not far away. If you are a child of God, then God is with you in this battle. God is guiding you and protecting you. He loves you. When the pressures and persecution of this world begin to overwhelm us, we can cast our fears and burdens on Him, and He will sustain us and help us through it. We don’t know what the future will mean for us as christians, but we do know that we have a good, faithful God who is with us every step of the way.

Next, it’s telling us the main cause of these issues and warning us how to protect ourselves. The reason for the brokenness around us is: Satan. Satan is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour- and Peter is telling christians point blank, that we’re on Satan’s hit list. You living out your faith in your life, your marriage, your children, your church- he wants to attack you and destroy you.  He WANTS to destroy you. And He is TRYING to destroy you. Right now, right where you are, Satan has already drawn the battle lines and is at this very moment, waging a war over your life. If you’re not aware of this, you need to wake up. And thankfully, as we’ll go over in our next point, Peter tells us how:

Peter tells us, “be alert and of sober mind.” So he’s saying that Satan’s battle ground over your life is happening first and foremost in your MIND, ok, the MIND is the devils playground. That is where He is going to attack you before anything else. If you want to know what is in your heart, look at what types of things are in your mind: Those things will eventually make their way into your actions. The way to be on guard against the attacks from the devil, is by, being alert and aware of their existence and watching and discerning what types of things you are allowing to enter, influence, and sway your mind and therefore your actions, and by being sober minded, so not letting the distractions and influences of this world delude your spiritual and biblical senses and make your mind basically drunk and not fully operating in tune with God and where it should be. Alright, so, be on the alert that Satan is working in the events around you to try to wage attacks against your mind, and be focused on the important things: What the Bible says and how it should affect the way you think and act.

Alright, so that’ step 1. And as always, I want to make these podcasts as practical and applicable to your life as possible, so let’s throw out some examples here: What are some practical applications for this step? I think the main one is, Pay attention. Pay attention to the message behind the TV shows and the movies you’re watching. Pay attention to the sources you’re getting your information from. Pay attention to the funding and the people that influence and control the sources you’re getting your information from. Pay attention to the headlines and actually research and think through a news report for yourself instead of just letting the headline and the packaged narrative do the thinking for you. Discern and ask yourself, not what is this party or this group’s stance on this issue, but what is God’s stance? What does the Bible say?

This leads me to the next and final part of the passage: “Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” When we are aware of Satan’s schemes and attacks around us, we must resist him. We do this by standing firm in the faith. Faith that God is who He says He is, and faith in who we are in Him. You see, the devil is a liar. John 8:44 says “he was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” Satan not only lies constantly through the world around us, but he lies to our minds by assaulting our identity in Christ, by questioning God’s words and what they really mean just as he questioned Eve in the garden “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”. By standing firm in our faith in who God says He is, that what He says is true, and who we are in Him, we can fend off the assaults of Satan. Just as Ephesians 6:16 when talking about the armor of God says, “In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” Satan doubts and questions and condemns, but by faith in God, we call him a liar and are free.

And lastly, we know we are not alone, “because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” All through the Bible and all through the world right now, others are taking up their cross and following Christ, Dying to themselves, so that they may live with Christ. We are not alone, and the hope we have as christians in this life and the life to come is worth far more than any comfort or acceptance this world has to offer.

Matthew 16: 24-26 “Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”

Be blessed, be encouraged, and be a good steward of the gift of grace that is being saved, and being a disciple of Christ.

Podcast: A New Voice: Finding Peace in a Troubling World

Christian Encouragement

Finding Truth, Hope, and Peace in Today’s World

Hello, coming at you from my blog Good Stewards, a community of people dedicated to being a Good Stewards, their health, lives, and world, my name is Emily Allison and today I want to share something different than what you’re probably seeing all over the TV and social media right now: I’m going to share something true, something hopeful, and something encouraging that should transform the way you feel and the way you live your life.

I think it’s safe to say that most of us ( and I’m going to put myself first in line here), have looked at the cultural and political circumstances and world events in recent months (and probably years) and have experienced feelings of fear, anxiety, anger, frustration, discouragement, maybe even hopelessness. As a christian, living in Minneapolis MN by the way, right now with all the race riots and looting and extreme political divide, I’ve been disheartened and angered by the way the world has responded to recent events, but I’ve been especially discouraged by the way I’ve seen Christians respond. I’ll save my political thoughts and critiques for another blog post, but for now, I want to share something for you no matter what side of the issues you find yourself on: if you’re a follower of Christ, and you genuinely are striving to live as His disciple and seek to obey, serve, and glorify Him with your life, then this is applicable to you.

For the Anxious, fearful, and discouraged person: Let me give you a truth to lean on:

God is at work. God is in control. And not only that, but God is working and controlling things to HIS advantage. God will make Satan a footstool under His feet. He WILL defeat sin and evil, He WILL have the final victory, and every knee WILL bow and EVERY tongue WILL confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

A little background about me, I’m a political communications and history major, and I worked quite extensively in politics for several years before becoming a mom. And I think it’s easy to fall into a way of thinking that the world is always getting worse and worse. That back then was the good old days, and since then people and culture have just taken an unsalvageable turn for the worse. Well, I want to encourage you today that I don’t believe that’s true.

If you take a look at world history and history in our country as well, there have been WAAAAY darker times. There have been horrific times that many of us can’t truly imagine or wrap our heads around. Humanity HAS come a long way. The fact that we are talking about the issues we are today, such as valuing human life, spreading awareness so people can make safe choices for their families health, and racial equality is a testament to that. There was a time when there was no discussion about these issues. The narrative was set, or so it seemed.

Let me tell you something: The only narrative that is set is God’s narrative. He has already overcome the world, and He put you and me here on this earth to be His hands and feet. To be a light and let our light shine before our fellow humans so that they may see our good works and glorify God. If God didn’t think the world was capable of saving, he wouldn’t have sent Jesus. If the apostles didn’t think the evil and warped mind of both worldly and religious groups alike weren’t capable of seeing God and accepting the truth, then they wouldn’t have kept spreading the good news of the gospel.

We are HIS handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do GOOD works that He has prepared in advance for us to do. So do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Be strong and courageous, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. He is on the throne. He is in control. His ways are higher. His ways are good. And He will never leave us or forsake us. We don’t have to understand everything, there will be lots of unknowns in life. All we have to do is trust Him and Obey Him.

Lastly, we are not helpless. Not just because we have the almighty all powerful God of the universe taking care of us and loving and watching over and guiding us moment by moment every day, and working all things together for our good, but also because guess what, we DO have the freedom to take actionable steps in our country and world to make it a better place. People have done it before in much more trying circumstances, and so can we.

So if you’re wondering what you can do, here’s what you can do: First, You can be a truth seeker, not seeking out one side or another but seeking out God’s side. What does God think? What are the facts? What is the truth? Educate yourself and pray for wisdom and guidance and grace so that you can think biblically and truthfully about the various circumstances you encounter in this world.

Be a light: Anyone can rant. Anyone can have an opinion. Anyone can argue. It takes real fruits of the spirit, love, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, self control, to be a witness for Christ in the midst of volatile and important topics. Wherever you are, before you try to represent one opinion over another, remember first that you are supposed to be representing God. Be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Live out your faith in such a way that it is so radically different from everything else we see in our culture that people have no choice but to see God’s attributes on display through you.

Next, Act. Get involved in honest, above reproach organizations that are making a positive impact in our country and world. Volunteer, give money, pray, vote, spread awareness, etc. We have more freedom as Americans than any other people in the history of the world. This is OUR government. A citizen led government, by the people, for the people. So don’t helpless worry about the people who are leading our government, and step up and lead yourself- lead your family, your community, your state, your country. If you know better and want things to be done better, then step up and actually contribute and help make it happen.

Lastly, have joy. Our hope and joy is based on things far greater and better than anything this world has to offer. Let us live our life here faithfully and obediently to god, being good stewards of His many gifts and fulfilling His purposes for us, so that when His to do list for us is done, we can stand before Him and hear “well done good and faithful servant.” Find joy in the eternal hope we have in Christ. Find Joy in the forgiveness of sin. Find joy in having a loving heavenly father who cares about the most intimate aspects of your life and heart. What a good father we have, what amazing truths we can dwell on every moment of every day. What exciting and encouraging hope we have in this life and for all eternity.

Be blessed, be encouraged, and go be a good steward of all these things.

Hi, I’m Emily! I am a wife, mom of two, and clean living blogger! My goal with any of the content I put out is to educate, inspire, and encourage moms in the faith as they do the amazing and important work of raising the souls of the next generation in God’s truth.

One of the core beliefs that led to the creation of Good Stewards is the belief that everything we have is a gift from God: our health, lives, and world have been entrusted to us, and we are to be good stewards of those gifts. (Read more about our Mission Statement here!) As a fellow mom, I know that the most important thing that has been given to us is our sweet children– and the opportunity to show them what it means to love and follow Christ. I also know that doing that is probably the most challenging thing we will ever do!

The Challenging Work of Mothering in the Faith

That is why I created this magazine. I see moms online all the time that are going through this challenging work of raising children in the Lord. I see them working out their own salvation day in and day out so they can authentically live it out in front of their children. I see them wrestling with the tough questions. I see them surrendering their control and handing over their burdens and fears to God. I’m inspired by these moms, and I want to come along side them, put my arm around them and say “You are doing so great- keep fighting the good fight!”. When I see a mom struggling, I want to open up my Bible and tell her to not lose heart!

Because of this, I share my own motherhood journey on Instagram in order to provide encouragement and inspiration for christian moms. In addition to this, I wanted to use my gifts of creativity and writing to put something special together through my blog. Something to refresh, encourage, and inspire my fellow moms. Something to feed their souls, lift their hearts, and empower them to continue to answer their most important calling.

Why the Freedom Edition?

With the realities of adulthood, motherhood, and everything else going on in our world, I’ve done a lot of thinking, learning, and praying these past several months. If there is one big takeaway for me, it is this concept of the freedom we have as part of God’s kingdom.

Freedom from fear. Freedom from the to do list, from insecurity, from anxiety. Freedom from anger, division, hatred. Freedom from warped thinking and the footholds Satan has on our minds. Freedom from peer pressure, freedom to do our own research and prayerfully discern our own path. Freedom to get down to the basics and allow the truths of the gospel and the Holy Spirit to direct our thoughts and actions. Freedom to seek truth and have courage, even when it won’t be well received. Freedom to not be driven and tossed by the winds of culture and popular opinion but rather root ourselves in the truths of God and live like a disciple of Christ. Freedom from confusion without answers. Freedom from fear without hope and hardship without promise. Freedom to clearly see and call out Satans’ lies and deception.

Where The Spirit of the Lord is, There is Freedom

As followers of Christ, we have the holy spirit living inside of us, and “where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17. Freedom to drown out every other voice (including our own) in order to hear God’s. As moms, we have so many voices calling out to us and so many things on our minds. Often, we need to just be still in God’s presence and listen for His voice.

The Bible says that Satan is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour, and mamas- you and your family are on his hit list. Aside from praying for angels of protection over my family and wisdom and guidance for me as a mother, I have been asking God for freedom as well. Freedom from fear and freedom to cast off the sin that so easily entangles me as a mother so that I can be empowered by God to run the race God has set out for me and help my children do the same. That’s why we need to surround ourselves with resources that will provide encouragement and inspiration for christian moms as we fight this critical battle!

We are the Gatekeepers to Our Homes

Mothers, we are the gatekeepers to our homes. Not just against physical outside forces, but against the spiritual attacks of Satan. He wants your children for Himself, and he knows you are the most effective way to get to them. Guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. My main message when trying to provide and encouragement and inspiration to Christian moms is this: Root yourselves in God’s truths alone and be very wary of what you allow to control your mind and beliefs. Put aside all distractions and focus your efforts on being a disciple of Christ day in and day out for your children to see and model after. Offer your heart and hands to the Lord and allow Him to work in and through you to accomplish His wonderful plans.

Offer Your Heart & Hands to the Lord and Let Him Work Through You

This magazine is all about helping you do that. In this journal, you will come across mothers who share glimpses of their lives, hearts, and souls. You will be amused by their stories, edified by their lessons, and inspired by their faith. As you thumb through the pages, it will be a journey of beauty, calm, and adventure all in one. So pack it in your bag for the park or lake, or keep it on your coffee table for quiet moments when the kids are napping. Poor yourself a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, and let adventure begin!
